Ever wonder what daily life looks like for a grad student at Ben-Gurion University (BGU)? Meet Devo Silberfarb — a master’s student in social work, dog mom to Dakota, and an active part of the JLIC @ BGU community.
Devo’s day starts early with a bit of grounding: she wakes up, davens (prays), and takes Dakota for a much-needed morning walk around Be’er Sheva’s quiet streets. Then it’s off to campus, where she jumps right into a shiur (class) with Rav Idan, the JLIC @ BGU director — a chance to add some meaningful learning into her busy schedule.
Between classes, Devo makes time to wander the sunny campus, grab lunch, and catch up with friends. Her afternoons are filled with social work lectures and study sessions in the library — but always with good company and plenty of laughs.
After class, it’s back to walking Dakota for round two. On her walk, she stops by to visit Prielle Rakovsky, JLIC’s incredible co-director, for a quick chat and some words of encouragement. Then she heads to the Andarta (monument) — a special spot at the edge of Be’er Sheva where the sunset views are unbeatable.
The day wraps up exactly the way you’d hope: a laid-back BBQ, marshmallows roasting over a fire, and friends all around.
At BGU, life is about balance — studies, connections, Jewish community, and taking in the beautiful desert city that so many students call home.
